'Are You Not Entertained?' The Reason a Two-Day Fixture Deserved Its Status as a Proper Test Match.

Displayed inside a glass case on the third floor of the Melbourne Cricket Ground sits a vibrant pink outfit performed in by the pop star. His show in front of a massive crowd of spectators was seen as a success.

You might not like Robbie Williams. You might think he is the ultimate present to music the world has ever seen. Alternatively, you may hold a middle ground, admitting that some hits are belting while others are poor.

The point being is that amusement can be delivered diversely. You like what you like. There is no universal formula to create music or even five-day cricket.

The Unrivalled Depth of The Test Format

The five-day game boasts incomparable variety. It is hard to think of another sport where the outcome is so dictated by conditions.

The weather, the session, the ball – the factors are countless. Crucially is the pitch.

If the long game is a form of art, the pitch is the blank slate on which the athletes create their art.

An Abstract Contest: The Fourth Test

The fourth Ashes Test between the old rivals was an abstract version of cricket, the traditional sport dismantled and reconstructed in an unusual manner.

Let's be clear, this isn't a defence of the wicket which resulted in a victory and the another short match of the contest.

Having 10mm of grass on the wicket, leading to numerous dismissals being taken in less than six sessions, is not a balanced duel between batter and bowler.

A Diverse Legacy: The Core of Test Cricket

But any notion this was a lesser event, one that should be qualified as inauthentic, is incorrect.

Test cricket is a rich tapestry, 2,615 parts and still growing. On occasion, as seen at the MCG, the cricket ball does all sorts for the pace bowlers. Other times, it grips and turns on a spinning track. At other venues, the pitch is flat as a pancake, other times it spits like a cobra.

The exciting finishes are all the more thrilling because of the patience made during quieter periods.

Problem Solving: The Core Skill

Certain variables are embraced more freely than others.

The argument in at the MCG was that the balance was tipped too far towards the attack. That the best players were prevented from playing their natural game.

Test cricket is about adapting to challenges – reading the wicket and responding appropriately. The two highest individual innings were made by acknowledged batters. One line-up made more mistakes than the other, and thus lost.

Sheer Celebration: For Those Who Waited

Attempt to convince the devotees who have endured years of defeat that this lacked spectacle.

In a corner of the MCG, thousands waved their flags and created an atmosphere, fostering a carnival vibe in a heartland of Australian cricket.

There was hope as the attack dominated, momentum when the top order fought back, and rapturous celebration when the victory was achieved.

Extreme Ends: The Range of Test Matches

The Melbourne has previous experience with difficult wickets. Previously, a game there featured a wicket with the excitement of a a non-event.

That fixture was a slog, with minimal action and slow play. This recent match and that drawn affair are extreme ends of the range – neither the standard, yet value can be found in both.

At this stage into the current series, it is the quick finishes that will live longest in the memory.

"Far from being the end of the long game at all," commented a veteran. "The people who have been privileged to see these 48 hours have been given some fantastic sport. An unusual spectacle."

Baby Steps: Building for the Future

In the lead-in to this Test, the skipper spoke like a man carrying the weight of the world on his back.

The squad protected him, reinstating the smile to his countenance.

Different players performed with key contributions. These are incremental gains, not nearly enough to ensure long-term futures, but something to build on.

At the very least, this Melbourne victory is added to other notable performances in dead rubbers.

As the fans left into a beautiful night, the squad assembled on the turf to begin their own enjoyment.

Celebrate the win, boys. It's well deserved.
